Film Club

Llanharan Primary School runs a very successful Film Club, which operates every week after school from 3:30 – 5:15pm. It is a place for pupils to sit, watch and enjoy a wide range of films with their friends. There is then a commitment for pupils to write a review about the film they watched on the Into Film website.

The pupils choose the films we watch in Film Club, but we have set rules for our Film Club:

  1. If you have seen the film, you are not allowed to select it.
  2. If you think others have seen the film, you are not allowed to select it.
  3. Films have to be U or PG certificate.
  4. The more interesting the film, the better.

We are an Into Film Cymru Ambassador school and our Film Club has been twice nominated for Film Club of the year, narrowly missing out on the final selection. The Film Club leader, Mr Roberts is also an Into Film Ambassador, meeting regularly with Into Film Cymru. He was also chosen as Into Film’s Educator of the Year 2019 at a national ceremony held in Leicester Square, London.

We run a weekly film review competition at school level and every review written by a pupil will be entered into the national UK-wide, weekly film review writing competition run by Into Film. The staff at Into Film read every review submitted that week, choosing their 10 favourites from children around the four corners of the United Kingdom. These ten are then sent a prize through the post to our school and their reviews are added to the IMDB (Internet Movie Database) website entry for the film they reviewed. They become published film critics!

Our pupils have been incredibly successful in this national review writing competition. We currently stand at 17 pupils being chosen as one of the ten best written reviews in whole of the United Kingdom for that week. Our winners are:

17 – Murrin – 11 March 2020 – The Neverending Story

When Aardman came to Llanharan Primary School

On Tuesday 20th March 2018, a little bit of Hollywood came to Llanharan Primary School, as Jim Parkyn, a model maker at Aardman Animation came to deliver a model making workshop for the pupils.

Pupils from the school had the amazing opportunity to create their own character from Aardman’s latest film – prehistoric sports adventure Early Man – using clay and cocktail sticks.

Jim’s easy to follow instructions gave the young people a look at the different uses of engineering skills, geometry and storytelling techniques that all combine to create Aardman’s many masterpieces, including Chicken Run and the Wallace & Gromit films.

Visit to see Luke Evans

On 3rd March 2020, we were extremely fortunate to have been invited to attend a Question and Answer session with Hollywood star Luke Evans. We visited Ysgol Gymraeg Treganna in Cardiff and our pupils not only got to ask the star some questions, but also had a photograph taken with him.

Into Film Cymru’s Youth Advisory Council

We are incredibly proud that we currently have two members associated with our school on Into Film Cymru’s Youth Advisory Council. These pupils meet with a small group of other school children from around Wales, to help focus and lead Into Film’s input into schools.

Celebrating and Sharing Good Practice:

Mr Roberts has, on many occasions, been invited to share the excellent practice that is going on with the use of film at Llanharan Primary School.
